Your name, delivery address, payment details and documents in your account remain accessible to the service, and the Bitcoin transaction history remains public. For privacy, combine a VPN with sharing as little optional data as possible when you buy.
Distinguish between the addresses
An IP address is the network address of a connection, from which an approximate location can be determined. A postal address shows where you live or receive deliveries, while a Bitcoin address is used for receiving bitcoins. Changing your IP does not change the other two.
A VPN (virtual private network) routes your connection through a different server. When buying cryptocurrency, it hides from the exchange the location determined by your original IP, but your country of residence may still be known from your profile and documents.
| Data | Who receives it | What a VPN changes |
|---|---|---|
| Original IP | PayPal, the exchange; when relaying, Bitcoin nodes may log it | Replaces it with the visible server address for connections through the VPN |
| Device information and cookies | PayPal, the services you visit | Does not remove or replace them |
| Geolocation | PayPal; the exchange may determine it from the IP | Changes the IP-based estimate, but not information from other sources |
| Name, card, identity document | The service to which you provided them | Does not hide them |
| Delivery address | Parties involved in placing and fulfilling the order | Does not hide the address you entered |
| Bitcoin transaction history | Any observer of the public network | Does not change the visibility of records |
PayPal's data collection is described in its UK privacy policy, and the public nature of transactions and the possibility of IP logging are covered in the Bitcoin.org guide.
PayPal data
At registration, PayPal collects your IP address, device information, cookie data and identity documents. At checkout, it adds the delivery address, delivery option and cost, purchase history and seller details. A VPN does not remove this information from your account.
Cookies are browser records that allow a website to store information about sessions; changing your IP does not delete them. PayPal also collects geolocation and uses precise location to improve security.
PayPal's automated checks assess signs of fraud, money laundering and concealment of a real identity. Changing your IP may affect the risk assessment, and if a risk is identified, PayPal may refuse to provide new services.
Keep your details accurate
Keep your details about your country of residence and the account holder accurate. Do not use a VPN to bypass identity verification or to create a false impression of your location.
- Choose a server in the United Kingdom if you are located there and use a UK account
- Avoid changing connection countries during a single purchase
- Submit requested documents via the official website or app
General steps for problems with sign-in and payment are described in the article on how to use banking and payment services with a VPN enabled.
Bitcoin's public nature
Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency with a public and traceable transaction history, which is stored permanently in a shared ledger, the blockchain. This property cannot automatically be attributed to every cryptocurrency.
During relaying, that is, the passing of a transaction between network nodes, an observer may log the IPs of connections. If the wallet's connection goes through a VPN, the VPN server's address will be visible. The link between the purchase and the exchange account is nevertheless preserved.

| Stage | What information may remain | Limit of a VPN's effect |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase on a cryptocurrency exchange | Account, documents upon verification, record of the purchase | Changes the visible IP, but not the account information |
| Relaying the transaction to nodes | The connection's IP when relaying is observed | Hides the original IP only when routed through the VPN |
| Entry in the Bitcoin blockchain | Addresses, amounts and transaction links | Does not hide the public history |
| Receiving the goods | Order, name and delivery, if they are required | Does not hide the information provided to the seller |
Use a new address for receiving
Use a new Bitcoin address for each incoming payment, as Bitcoin.org recommends. This reduces the linking of receipts through a reused address, but does not rule out analysis of the links between transactions. The exchange's identity verification requirements remain in force.
For example, you received one payment to a published address and created a new one for the second. There will be no direct link through address reuse, but other links in the history may remain.
Reduce the data you provide
Reduce the data you provide to what is necessary for payment and order fulfilment. When shopping, follow the recommendations of the UK's National Cyber Security Centre:
- Skip optional fields in forms
- Choose guest checkout if the shop offers it
- Decline to save your card in the browser
- Check the site's address before entering your password and card details
For online purchases, the NCSC recommends a credit card if you have one, and advises avoiding direct bank transfers. For PayPal, check the terms of purchase protection. A VPN does not protect against phishing, a fake shop or the theft of your credentials. HTTPS encrypts the transmitted content, such as your password and card number, but does not confirm the seller's good faith.
Frequently asked questions
Does the seller see my IP when paying through PayPal with a VPN?
When connecting to the shop through a VPN, the seller sees the VPN server's address. The parts of PayPal's privacy statement reviewed for this article do not say exactly what additional information PayPal passes to a particular seller.
Can PayPal restrict an account simply because you use a VPN?
The policy does not confirm automatic restriction for the mere fact of using a VPN. Check the reason for a specific restriction in the PayPal notification.
Does paying for a VPN with cryptocurrency hide the account holder?
No. The payment method on its own does not remove the link to the account. For example, the privacy policy of CitadelVPN dated 29.07.2026 provides for separate processing of your email address, account status and payment confirmations. So a crypto payment does not mean the absence of data about the user.
Check the limits of privacy
Check what information you want to hide. A VPN replaces the visible IP, but your documents and address in PayPal, your exchange account details and the public Bitcoin history remain accessible. Fill in only the required fields and use a new address each time you receive bitcoin. These measures reduce data disclosure, but do not provide anonymity and do not remove the need for identity verification.
